For many, the mirror is just glass. A simple reflection. But for others, it’s a battlefield—a place where every inch of their body is scrutinized, compared, and sometimes, rejected.

It starts subtly with a passing comment, a side glance, a joke that lingers longer than it should.

Over time, those moments pile up, shaping how we see ourselves, how we walk into a room, how we exist in our own skin.

Some learn to shake it off. Others carry the weight of those words for years.

Today, we’ll talk about an adolescent boy.

This boy represents every child, teen, or adult who has struggled with body image whether due to body shaming, self-doubt, or a lack of confidence in their appearance and has faced mental health challenges as a result.

Whether it’s being called too tall, too short, too thin, or too fat, people always seem to have something to say about bodies that aren’t their own..

Charles knew this all too well. He was bullied in school because of his body. He was frail, weak, small and thin, with a scar that marred his face. His peers never let him forget it. 

They gave him all sorts of names, each chipping away at his confidence. No one wanted him in their circle.

Every morning, he barely looked in the mirror. What was the point? No matter how much he tried to stand straighter or tuck in his shirt, he would still be him, too thin, too weak, too scarred.

He didn’t have the words to explain the battle inside his mind.

This is what body image concerns do. They don’t just stay in the mirror; they seep into the mind, shaping self-worth, affecting mental health. Anxiety. Depression. Eating disorders. Isolation.

His father always tried to cheer him up whenever he came home with a gloomy face, but sometimes, his efforts irritated him. 

He doubted his father’s words when he called him handsome or tried to highlight his uniqueness. 

Of course, his father had to love him; he was his son. But the world didn’t have that obligation.

It was the third week of resumption, the week his English teacher would collect their essays and call them out one after the other to read before the class.

His first experience still haunted him. The way his classmates had booed him when he stammered. The way their laughter rang in his ears long after he sat down.

Now, as he rearranged his bag, he took one final look at the sheet before slipping it into the envelope. His hands lingered over the paper.

He had a feeling this moment would be different.

But that day something different happened.

His English teacher, the one he had dreaded so much, called him aside after class.

“Charles, I’ve read your essay. It’s raw and honest. You have a way with words.” Charles blinked. No one had ever said something like that before.

The teacher continued, “I see school has been tough. And I want you to know, you don’t have to go through this alone. Have you ever spoken to someone about how you feel?”

Spoken? About what? That he felt like he didn’t belong in his own skin? That he wished he could be someone else?

The teacher handed him a small note. “The school counselor is available. If you ever want to talk, I think it could help.”

Help. The word sat heavy in Charles’ chest. Could talking really change anything?

1. Focus on What Your Body Can Do, Not Just How It Looks :

Strength, endurance, movement; our body does so much more than just exist for appearance. Appreciate it for that.

Social media often promotes unrealistic beauty standards. Curate your feed to include positive, body-neutral or body-positive content.

Pay attention to your inner dialogue. If you constantly criticize yourself, challenge those thoughts. Would you say the same to a friend?

Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or mentor. Sometimes, sharing how you feel can lessen the weight.

Therapy can help reshape negative thoughts and provide coping strategies. Counselors and therapists offer a safe space to work through these struggles.

The Importance of Therapy for Body Image Struggles

Therapy isn’t just for extreme cases, it’s for anyone struggling with their self-worth and mental well-being. 

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), for example, helps in recognizing and challenging negative thought patterns about body image.
