It was during a particularly heated argument that Victor’s defenses finally crumbled. He had accused her of being too demanding, of expecting too much, when she finally lost her temper.

“I’m not the one setting us up to fail, Victor. You are!” she yelled. “You’re so convinced I’ll leave and you’re doing everything to make sure it happens.”

Gradually, they started to rebuild their connection. They both became aware of their moments of self-sabotage and made different choices. 

One evening, as they relaxed on the couch, Victor spoke gently. “I’ve spent so much time bracing for the worst, I forgot to savor the good moments.”

Athena smiled, tears welling in her eyes. “I also failed to see my demons too.”

They weren’t without flaws. Victor still had his missteps, and Athena continued to grapple with trusting that the changes would endure. But they were making an effort, and that was enough.

In the future, when they were ready to marry, they knew they would need more than just therapy. Like any couple, they would seek marriage counseling, a space to ensure they kept building a solid foundation for the life they envisioned together.
